The district office has given the green light for the construction of Berlin's largest data center on Rhinstrasse. The project called "BlueStar" was developed by PREA Construction GmbH and includes an investment volume of one billion euros. The data center will perform 100 megawatts (MW) and theoretically can supply about ten million office workstations in Germany with IT, software and data. A unique energy concept will implement that includes energy -efficient cooling, the use of renewable energies for the power supply and the use of the waste heat for the heat supply of apartments. Commissioning is planned for the first quarter of 2026.
The project is divided into eight self -sufficient parts that are distributed over four separate parts of the building. In addition, an energy management building and a substation on the 56,000 square meter property are built. Each building has a separate power supply and a connection to the district heating network. This corresponds to the highest standards in terms of redundancy, default protection, security and efficiency.
Another important feature of the project is the targeted use of the waste heat. It can either be fed into the Berlin district heating network or used for surrounding residential and commercial buildings. As a result, around two million square meters of living and commercial space can be supplied.
The project is referred to by the Senator for Economic Affairs, Energy and Companies, Franziska Giffey (SPD), as a "landmark for the future development of the digital industry in Berlin". It emphasizes the importance of such data centers for the growth of Berlin, the goal of becoming climate -neutral and becoming the number one innovation location in Europe.
This data center will not only offer an enormous amount of IT performance, but will also ensure sustainable energy supply and use. It will help to further strengthen Berlin's position as a leading technology and digital location.
