Gröner-Group AG stops Bau in Berlin: Effects on affordable living space?

Christoph Gröner, a leading building contractor in Germany, has had his business headquarters in Berlin, but have not realized any construction projects in the capital for two years. In 2020 he financially supported the Berlin CDU, although he described himself as a convinced social democrat. The decision to no longer build in Berlin is related to the exploding property prices. Gröner emphasizes that building itself is not the problem, but the exorbitant property costs. Berlin has changed drastically since its beginning of the construction project in the city in 2010, with an almost ten -fold increase in property prices in just 15 years.

GRÖNER emphasizes the lack of purchasing power of Berliners as the main reason for his decision not to invest in the city anymore. He compares the Situation in other cities in Germany, such as Munich or Cologne, where purchasing power is significantly higher. Despite the potential in Berlin, the unaffordable high property prices have led to his company no longer pursued new projects in the city since 2022.

The building contractor emphasizes how ideological discussions and political decisions hinder housing in Berlin. He suggests that politics should keep housing out of such discussions and to develop a master plan to create affordable living space. Gröner warns that in view of the lack of housing, people from despair could choose extremist parties. In his opinion, the key to the solution is to create faster building rights, efficient use of available building sites and broad political cooperation to cope with the housing problem.
