ATM sprinkling in Reinickendorf and Spandau: Criminals frighten banks
Burglary and ATM sprinkling in Reinickendorf
On Thursday afternoon, a burglary occurred in Reinickendorf, a district in the north of Berlin, into a bank branch and the demolition of an ATM. The bank was still open at the time when the criminals struck. It is still unclear whether there is a connection between the two acts and is examined by the police.
The slump into the bank branch in Residenzstrasse was known at around 4 p.m. by the trigger of the burglar alarm. The bank's employees and customers then left the building and immediately alerted the police. When searching the bank's basement, the emergency services found a levered door and broken down compensation compartments. The exact extent of the prey is not yet known, further investigations are carried out by the specialist commissioner of the State Criminal Police Office.
In another bank branch in the Falkenhagener Feld district in Berlin-Spandau, an ATM sprinkling also occurred on Thursday. In the early morning hours, the perpetrators caused an explosion at the ATM in the Posthausweg. Then they fled undetected. Fortunately, nobody was injured in the incident. Here, too, the State Criminal Police Office takes over the further investigation and search measures.
The explosion of ATMs is unfortunately not an isolated case in Berlin. According to the police, a total of 92 ATMs were blown up across the city between 2018 and early March 2023. Most cases occurred in 2021 and 2022 with 26 explosions each. A total of 33 of these explosions were successful.
The police are working intensively to identify the perpetrators and to hold them into account. ATM blasts are not only a danger to the financial institutions concerned, but also for residents and passers -by. It is therefore important that such crimes are consistently pursued and combated.
