Fu Berlin defends itself against container village: joy or anger?

The planned container village for 260 refugees on the fallow unibles in Dahlem, Berlin, encounters resistance, especially from the Free University. The university actually plans to build a building for teaching and research. The university committees were surprised by the Senate plans and felt over. The President of the FU, Andrea Güttner, emphasized that the area was not suitable for accommodation of refugees and is urgently needed for his own construction work.

The FU has already helped in the past to temporarily accommodate refugees, but due to the high need for renovation and planned construction projects, there are currently no other areas available. The university proposes that vacant buildings of the Federal Real Estate Agency could be used nearby.

The Senate plans provide to build a total of 16 other container villages for refugees. These are to be created primarily in the eastern part of Berlin, which creates additional printing in the already high -recording districts such as Pankow. A container village is also to be created in Steglitz-Zehlendorf on the controversial university area, which leads to further discussions.

The criticism and the ridicule online against the FU and its resistance encounter controversial reactions. Some see the university as inconsistent in view of its self -image as cosmopolitan and tolerant. In addition to the direct protests, discussions are sparked by further controversy in connection with the accommodation of refugees in Berlin.
