Fu Berlin rebelled against planned refugee village

On the property on Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem, the Senate plans to build a container village to accommodate 260 refugees. However, the Free University (FU) shows resistance to these plans, since it actually wants to build a building for teaching and research there. The President of the FU, Günter Ziegler, complains that the university management was not included in the decision and was surprised by the Senate plans.

The FU has already supported refugees in the past, but referred to the fact that the area will be needed for its own construction projects from 2023. The university proposes to use empty buildings of the Federal Real Estate Agency as an alternative for refugee accommodation.

The Senate decided at the end of March to build 16 other container villages, since the need for living space for refugees in Berlin is still high. The locations for the new container villages are mainly planned in the eastern part of the city, which could lead to further reinforcement of the imbalance in refugee accommodation.

On the net there is criticism of the FU, which is mocked for its resistance to refugee accommodation. Some users point out that the university otherwise presents itself as cosmopolitan, but is intolerant on this topic. The debate shows that supposedly progressive institutions can also be confronted with challenges in the implementation of humanitarian measures.
