Fu Berlin in conflict: Container village instead of university building?
The Uniwelände on Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem, which is currently being used as a parking lot, is the focus of controversy. The Senate plans to build a container village for 260 refugees on an area of 4000 to 5000 square meters, which meets resistance. In particular, the Free University (FU) is worried because it actually wanted to build a building for teaching and research purposes. However, the refugee coordinator of Berlin intends to temporarily accommodate migrants there, which leads to tensions with the university.
The FU feels over, since the Senate plans were promoted without their consent. The president of the university complains that they have only learned from the media from the media. The university has already supported refugees in the past, but pointed out that the site is urgently needed for its own construction projects after 2023. The university proposes to use empty buildings of the Federal Real Estate Institute as an Alternative, since no other areas are available on the university campus.
The special representative for refugee questions at the Senate, Broemme, defends the plans and emphasizes that refugees can be accommodated on fallow areas as long as they are not used elsewhere. At the end of March, the Senate decided another 16 container villages because the need for accommodation for refugees in Berlin is high. The locations are mainly concentrated in the eastern part of the city, which leads to a further shift in imbalance.
The discussion about the refugee containers on the universe area in Dahlem has led to ridicule and criticism on the net. Some users express lack of understanding that the FU Berlin, which presents itself as cosmopolitan and tolerant, shows resistance to the accommodation of refugees on the campus. The discrepancy between the values and the actions of the university is critically questioned and leads to debates on the credibility of the institution.
