Child poverty in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg: District relies on prevention
The press release No. 174 of June 20, 2024 informs that the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district is developing an integrated district strategy for the prevention of child poverty. In view of the high number of children and adolescents in the district who live in poverty, the development of a package of measures is considered urgent.
In Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, 23.2 percent of children under the age of 15 live in a community of needs in which services are obtained according to the Social Code II. This means that they are considered to be affected by child poverty. In addition, children and adolescents are at risk of poverty even if their families have less than 60 percent of the middle income. This definition makes it clear how widespread the problem of child poverty is in the district.
The Berlin strategy against child and family poverty aims to create equal opportunities for all children and adolescents. Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg will receive additional funds of 1.2 million euros this year to support projects for the prevention of child poverty in the district.
A concrete project that is promoted is located in the Tempelhofer suburb of the South of Kreuzberg. It becomes clear that child and family poverty in different parts of the district is widespread. In the Graefekiez, especially in the area of the old building block edge development, the children's poverty rate is particularly low. For this reason, the project "Education Travel 2023" was launched to achieve young people from various schools in the district.
The educational trip aims to show the young people various opportunities to cope with their challenges and to strengthen their personal development and their organizational cooperation. Low -threshold measures are intended to enable young people to change their reality of life and prepare for a better future. A joint neighborhood festival on June 26, 2024 is also organized to promote the participation of young people in social life.
The strategy against child poverty takes place both at the district level and in close cooperation with the Senate Education and Family Administration of Berlin. The aim of offering all children and adolescents in the district of equal opportunities and participation options is the focus.
