Peace protests in Berlin: Tens of thousands demand Never again war!”

On Friday, October 9, 2025, an impressive demonstration for peace and against rearmament took place in Berlin. Under the motto “Never again fit for war!” More than 450 groups, associations and parties, including the BSW and parts of the SPD, mobilized to send a strong signal against military conflicts. While police estimated the number of participants in Berlin at around 7,500, organizers said up to 20,000 people took part in the rally. The meeting began at Bebelplatz in Mitte and ended there again after a route via Friedrichstrasse.

In his speech, SPD member of the Bundestag Ralf Stegner, one of the key speakers, pointed out the alarming number of 21 wars and 150 military conflicts worldwide. He emphasized the need for Germany to become capable of peace and not of war. Other speakers came from organizations such as the BSW and the Left, as well as conscientious objectors from Russia and Ukraine. The demonstrators carried placards with demands such as “Peace in the Middle East” and “Jobs and environmental protection, no weapons!”. Palestinian flags and a few Russian flags could also be seen.

Criticism of the government

The speeches heavily criticized the Federal Government's stance regarding Israel's actions in Gaza. Many participants said that they perceived the European Union's position in the Ukraine war as escalating. The commitment to peace and disarmament has traditionally been supported by diverse social movements, such as the Peace Movement, which want to actively prevent wars and armaments.

The historical development of these movements shows that resistance to war is not new. Since the 1850s, there have been repeated attempts in Europe to abolish or limit war as a means of politics. The peace movement has taken various forms, from the Divine Peace movement in the 10th century to the massive protests against nuclear weapons in the 1980s.

In the context of the current geopolitical situation, it is essential to strengthen the voices for peace and against military buildup. Friday's demonstration is an example of how citizens and organizations from different sectors of society come together to advocate for a more peaceful world.
