Free University of Berlin against Containerdorf: Resistance in the noble Kiez

The property on Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem, which is currently being used as a parking lot, could soon make room for a container village to offer space for 260 refugees. However, these plans encounter resistance, especially at the Free University. The university intends to build a building for teaching and research on the site and feels over the same time. The President of the FU, Günter Ziegler, said that the university management was not included in the decision and emphasized the willingness of the university to support refugee people.

The university pointed out that it has already provided emergency accommodation for refugees in the past, but urgently needed the property from 2023 for its own construction work. Alternatively, the university proposes to use empty buildings of the Federal Real Estate Agency nearby. The special representative for refugee issues at the Senate, Broemme, emphasized that refugees could be accommodated on broken areas as long as new buildings have not yet been built.

Overall, the Senate decided at the end of March to build 16 other container villages in Berlin in order to counter the lack of living space for refugees. However, this measure is not sufficient, and further locations are expected to follow. The planned container villages focus primarily on the eastern part of the city, which increases the imbalance in the distribution of refugee accommodation.

The resistance to the refugee accommodation in elegant districts such as Steglitz-Zehlendorf and the criticism of the Free University on the Internet raise questions. Some users indicate the discrepancy between the university's commitment to certain concerns and their attitude towards refugee accommodation. The debate about the refugee containers on the university area illustrates the challenges of creating accommodation for refugees and shows the various points of view in society.
