Title: Tips for fruit tree cultivation in Berlin: pests and challenges
A well -kept orchard in your own garden is the dream of many hobby gardeners. But the cultivation of fruit trees is not always easy in the regions with increased climatic challenges such as Berlin. Holger Zahn, owner of the Späthian tree nurseries in Treptow, gives valuable advice for successful fruit tree cultivation in the capital.
Zahn, who is both a trained fruit gardener and a studied horticultural engineer, recommends growing sweet cherry, apple, plum, sour cherry and peach for the Berlin garden. But there are also some to consider when choosing the right variety. For example, the pear grille rust is increasingly spreading in the allotment gardens of Berlin, a fungal disease that even affects as resistant varieties. Therefore, Zahn now advises its customers from pear trees.
In addition to the climatic conditions, pests also represent a major challenge. The sour cherry and currants are plagued by massive aphids every year, while the apple tree suffers from the clocking moth and occur in the sweet cherry maggots. The plum tree also casts its fruits prematurely because it is attacked by pests.
To fight these pestictions, Zahn recommends various measures. For example, the affected shoots can be cut off in good time against the mulberry scale insects on berry fruit. Alternatively, a cais soil solution or a rapeseed oil preparation can also be used. It is important to become active early and to quickly remove the infected shoots before the pests can spread further. Natural opponents such as the ladybug or slip wasps can also be used.
The right location and the soil conditions are also crucial for a successful fruit tree extension. While fully sunny locations used to be preferred, a partially shaded location today also proves to be advantageous. Soil improvements with loamy or rosy soil that can hold the water well are recommended due to the increasing drought in the Berlin region.
Another important aspect for fruit tree cultivation is the right cut. The plant cut in young trees in particular is crucial for growing and forming the crown of the tree. Therefore, incorrect cuts should be avoided so as not to affect the tree until the end of life. If you are unsure about this topic, you have the opportunity to take part in one of the fruit tree cut courses of the Späthschen tree nurseries.
Despite the challenges that the cultivation of fruit trees in Berlin brings with it, Holger Zahn is convinced that it is worth having fruit trees in your own garden. As the oldest company in Berlin, the Späthschen tree nurseries have many years of experience in the tree nurser area and can therefore give valuable tips for fruit tree cultivation. With the right varieties, measures against pests and a careful cut, the dream of your own orchard can also become a reality in Berlin.
