Essen leads Solar-Check 2024: German cities are increasingly relying on photovoltaics

The future seems radiant: photovoltaic systems are booming in Germany like never before! By the end of June, an impressive performance of over 90 gigawatts was achieved through installed PV systems. These impressive systems have fed a total of 30.5 gigawatt hours of green electricity into the network! But that's just the beginning! By 2030, the federal government is planning to install a further 125 gigawatts - a huge challenge that not only requires the expansion but also rapid progress!

But the latest result from the Solarcheck 2024 from Lichtblick shows that in the large cities of Germany it is up! The short report, which has followed the solar trends in the 14 largest cities in Germany since 2019, reveals a sensational statistics: four of the cities for the first time reach a solar factor of over 100 percent! An expression for aggressive solar expansion on newly built roof areas!

A look at the data

What exactly does the solar factor say? It shows the ratio between the area of the newly installed solar systems and the newly created roof areas in residential and commercial properties. A value over 100 percent means that not only the roof area, but also the photovoltaic modules have increased lively!

Nationwide, the average is 70 percent - a pleasant increase! 12 out of 14 cities can improve compared to the previous year. Only Bremen with a minus of 22.2 percent and Nuremberg, which drops by 6.2 percentage points, show a decline. But the winners are clear: food triumphs with a solar factor of fabulous 137.9 percent and secures first place! Cologne follows with 110 percent, Hanover with 105.8 percent and Leipzig has reached a proud 101.5 percent!

Not only the "solar capital" Essen presents! Berlin, Hamburg and Munich are also gaining ground, with the capital making the biggest leaps - an increase of 13.5 percent! A gratifying trend, even if there is still room for improvement: Frankfurt remains the bottom of 25.9 percent, but has also improved by 3.1 percentage points!

a new record in PV performance

Another impressive aspect of the solarcheck is the record-breaking performance of newly installed PV systems! With a total of 146.8 megawatts, the most creative phase has been reached so far! On average, there are an average of 1,000 inhabitants: already 12.08 kWp inside - an increase of an incredible 34.7 percent compared to the previous year! This increase is crucial because it enables more and more households to cover their electricity requirements with solar energy. Hanover and Leipzig in particular shine with peak values over 20 kWp per 1,000 inhabitants: inside - a true triumph of the green electricity!

In all of these positive developments, it should not be forgotten that the proportion of large systems that affect at least 100 kWp decreases easily. Even if Hannover and Leipzig are at the top and make up 92 percent or 90.2 percent, there is a total decline in the tenth of the Across The Country. 69 percent less occurred in Bremen!

to further promote the planned PV revolution, Lichtblick calls for a nationwide solar obligation! Although eleven federal states have already partially adopted regulations, the different standards and guidelines hinder the quick implementation. Uniform minimum standards could bring a significant improvement and help to raise annual expansion to a new level!

The results of the Solarcheck 2024 are an impressive sign of the energy economy future of Germany. Solar energy is the way to a clean and sustainable society!
