First Queeres youth center in Berlin's external districts: Tempelhof-Schöneberg supports LGBTQ+ young people with 300,000 euros

Berlin is planning a queer youth center in Tempelhof-Schöneberg. According to the coalition agreement between the CDU and SPD, the expansion of the offers for queer young people in the outskirts is sought. The project is to be financially supported by the Senate, who wants to provide 150,000 euros each in the next two years.

The queer youth center is operated by the Evangelical Church Circle as a carrier. It will take place three days a week in Café Albrecht in Tempelhofer Friedrich-Franz-Straße. On one to two days a week, offers are also planned in other fixed rooms on the outskirts, whereby the exact location in Marienfelde or Lichtenrade has not yet been determined.

The district council decided last year to try to state a queer youth center in the south of the city. The Greens and the SPD initiative was now successful. Elias Joswich, the queer-political spokesman for the Green BVV parliamentary group, is pleased about the development and emphasizes the importance of the inclusion of the outskirts. At the same time, however, he expresses concerns about the long -term financing of the youth center because he fears that the queer youth work has no special priority in the current Senate.

The spokeswoman for the youth administration confirms that the project will not be funded further from 2024/25. However, this does not mean that there is no longer any queer youth work in Treptow-Köpenick and that youth centers are generally in danger. The district continues to receive 100,000 euros for queer youth work. There are also two other queer youth centers in Mitte and Pankow.

The Evangelical Church Circle Tempelhof-Schöneberg has already gained experience with Queer youth work. In the parish of Alt-Schöneberg there has been a queer youth group called "Iwi" (I am What I am) for several years. The group offers various activities such as kickers, game evenings, barbecues, queer neighborhood tours and drag workshops.

The future queer youth center in Café Albrecht will be aimed at young lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans- and intersexuals as well as everyone who does not want to assign themselves. A special focus will be the shelter that young people are offered at the beginning of their coming out and young people with escape experiences. Das Projekt strebt außerdem an, Projekte in Schulen durchzuführen, um Toleranz zu fördern und Diskriminierung und Ausgrenzung junger queerer Menschen entgegenzuwirken. The church district has already advertised a full -time position for the project management and a mini job in the area of social media and hopes to be able to start with the queer youth center in October.
