Burglary in fire station: Renewed theft of spreading devices

Berlin - The fire station in Zehlendorf was again the goal of burglars. The perpetrators only struck in June and now they again managed to steal valuable spreading devices from the fire trucks. While the firefighters slept during the night, the unknown perpetrators penetrated the hall and stole two spreaders, two cylinders and two replacement batteries. The thieves also cut the associated clamping belts, which led to the removal of a fire truck. The police were alerted around 3:10 a.m. and arrived at the scene about three hours later.

The stolen spreading devices are battery -operated and have a value of more than 10,000 euros. With them, car doors can be opened and thick metal struts can be cut. This special tool has already been used for various crimes, such as the break -in into the green vault in Dresden in autumn 2019 or a robbery on a money transporter near Berlin Alexanderplatz in October 2018.

It is not the first time that the fire station in Zehlendorf has become the victim of thefts of this kind. As early as June, the hydraulic spreads were stolen from two fire trucks, while the crew of an ambulance had temporarily left the guard.

The fire brigade is now taking drastic measures to prevent future burglaries. The gate closures were shortened from two minutes to just 20 seconds. In addition, a replacement vehicle is available to replace the out of service.

The police union (GdP) has long been calling for a comprehensive equipment of fire guards with modern alarm, video and security technology. Benjamin Jendro, spokesman for the GdP, emphasizes that the Berlin fire brigade should not become a material warehouse for organized crime.

It remains unclear how the thieves managed to penetrate the hall of the fire station. The police are investigating and hoping for further information from the population.
