Successful security measures at UEFA Euro 2024: Fire brigades draw positive balance sheet
fire brigades draw positive record of the European Football Championship "UEFA Euro 2024"
The European Football Championship "UEFA Euro 2024" has not only remembered as a sporty high-class event, but above all as a major event. The extensive security plans carried out on the ten inventory cities have made a decisive contribution to this.
To offer the millions of fans in the stadiums, Fanzones and in public viewing a safe experience, the professional fire brigades of the inventory cities took measures several years ago. The fire brigades of the EM 2024 working group joined together under the roof of the working group of the professional fire brigades in the Federal Republic of Germany (AGBF Bund) and the German Fire Brigade Association (DFV). Together, protection goals were defined and an integrated security and hazard defense concept developed.
The extensive operational planning has proven to be extremely successful. Thanks to these plans, the fire brigades were always well prepared. During the UEFA Euro 2024, the fire brigades only had to cope with minor missions, all of which could be handled quickly and professionally. There was no major damage.
The main and volunteer emergency services from all areas of population protection also contributed to the success of the security concept. Members of the fire brigades, the Maltese auxiliary service, the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund, the Johanniter, DLRG, DRK, THW and the rescue center of the Bundeswehr Hospital Hamburg have ensured the basic protection and provided additional forces. Nation units for the analysis and identification of hazardous substances were also available at the venues.
The successful cooperation of all involved forces was crucial for the smooth running of the major event. The chairman of the EM 2024 working group, chief fire director Markus Heber from the Stuttgart fire department, thanked all emergency services for their professional work and their commitment. The President of the German Fire Brigade Association, Karl-Heinz Banse, also thanked the employers of the volunteer forces for their support in exemption from the professional activity.
The extensive preliminary planning and operational concepts for the UEFA Euro 2024 are also a valuable basis for future major events. The fire brigades are well equipped to ensure the safety of visitors even at upcoming events.
