Energy -efficient beer brewing: Bremer project makes the difference!

Brewing beer brewing: The breweries in front of a turning point!

The German beer industry is on the verge of a revolution! The energy -intensive production of beer could soon not only be more environmentally friendly, but also cheaper - thanks to innovative approaches and smart data technology. The project Brewflex in Bremen, headed by the Institute for Measurement Technology, Automation and Quality Science (BIMAQ), has set itself the goal of increasing the flexibility in the manufacturing processes of small and medium -sized breweries. But how exactly does it work and why is it so important?

With 56 % renewable energy share in 2023, Germany is on the right track to climate neutrality! But it is not enough. The breweries have to radically rethink their energy consumption. The solution? "Time -variable electricity prices" that make it possible to adjust production depending on the energy costs - a clever move in the energy transition!

a new approach for the old tradition

Beer production is a huge energy wender - but with Brewflex a fresh wind comes into the time -honored halls! Yannik Schadler, research assistant at BIMAQ, explains: "We are investigating the flexibility potential of electrical loads in the brewery." Specifically, this means that the breweries not only optimize their processes, but also save costs through targeted consumption adjustment.

The focus is particularly on small and medium -sized breweries, which often have no resources to become more efficient. This is where the project comes in: The analysis of real measurement data finds out how every company can adjust its consumption. The first measurements have already been made - the breweries have the option of putting their technologies through their paces!

"This data is worth gold!" Skuller continues. "We would like to develop an online tool that makes it easier for the breweries to assess their individual flexibility potential and compare themselves with others anonymously." A real gamechanger for the beer market!

savings in storage? Switch on!

An exciting interim conclusion of the project: The classic process steps such as mash and cooking offer little savings potential. But a completely different area brings hope back: the storage !

beer currently has to be cooled to around 0 ° Celsius, but surprise: it could also be stored at 2 ° Celsius without impairing the quality! A targeted adaptation of the cooling times could help the breweries to reduce their energy costs significantly - and that also benefits the environment!

But that's not all-with an extensive online tool that offers recommendations for action, the Bimaq wants to help small breweries. "We show exactly where you can start!" Explains Schafler. This could lead the industry to a green future in which less energy is required and more beer flows at the same time!

An exciting project with great potential - and not only for the breweries, but also for the environment. Stay on it, because the developments in the Brewflex project will certainly cause a sensation!
