The doctors take a break: the future of the Berlin punk rock legends uncertain

After three intensive years in which the band was continuously on tour and published three albums, drummer Bela B (61) in the ARD Podcast series "This one love" announced that a breath of breather is necessary. "Now air has to be snapped briefly," he says about the current situation. This is an open signal that the musicians need a moment for themselves.

During a magnificent concert weekend in Tempelhofer Feld, where the band played an average of 150,000 enthusiastic fans and rocked three hours each time, the energy was noticeable for everyone. For guitarist Farin Urlaub (60), the upcoming break also means the opportunity to plan new trips: «I would like to travel in detail next year - ecologically by the way. By bike and on foot », he explains in an interview with Radioins moderator Marco Seiffert.

A central topic that deals with the fans are the band's future plans. These remain vague and unclear. Bassist Rodrigo Gonzalez (56) is mysterious and answers the question of whether the doctors will continue to be active: "I will not tell you that!" He stirs up speculation about the band and their future. Farin vacation comments a little more optimistic: «We'll see how the concerts are. And if we still like each other afterwards, the band will probably continue to exist ». But in the air a big question mark is hovers over the coming months.

The decision for a break is not new for the self -proclaimed “best band in the world”. In 2019 there were already rumors about a possible dissolution when they launched a puzzling game on their website, which put the fans into a certain excitement. This breather could be the opportunity for the musicians to explore their solo projects and individual direction. All three band members have long been active in different musical projects.

The history of the doctors is characterized by ups and downs. Founded in 1982 during the “Neue Deutsche Welle” in West Berlin, the group experienced a temporary dissolution in 1988, but 1993: The comeback! With Rodrigo Gonzalez on board, the band continued to celebrate success and their concerts are known for the fact that they are sold out within a very short time. The band existence is often unpredictable, and the time will show where it will lead the doctors during their breather.
