DHL in Berlin: Package boom puts logisticians to its limits!
The logistics group DHL faces enormous challenges in Berlin in the run-up to Christmas and during the Black Friday week. The package volume has increased massively; DHL already recorded an increase of 60 percent compared to less busy times. According to Max Neumann, DHL regional manager, the capacities in the logistics centers are 90 percent busy. The "Cyber Week" from November 25th to December 2 accelerate the situation because online retailers are increasingly promoting discounts and offers. With around 250,000 packages in Berlin every day, the company counts on creative solutions to cope with growth, including the recruitment of 10,000 additional employees nationwide and the adaptation of working hours.
innovative delivery on the water
In addition to conventional delivery methods, DHL tests innovative approaches to relieve the streets. Since 2022, an electric mail ship, which consists of a converted excursion ship, has been supplied with the Spree. As part of this sustainable project, a second, significantly larger ship with a length of around 40 meters is to be put into operation. The aim is to transport up to 60 tons of charging capacity, which significantly expands the transport options. This environmentally friendly procedure could take over up to 15 percent of total package traffic in Berlin, as the DHL branch manager explains. The original solar ship promoted over 50,000 packages in the first six months.
The planned extensions include a second route that should lead through the city center and operate additional districts. The use of solar -powered boats and the establishment of solar -powered packing stations aim for even more sustainable logistics. This initiative could not only relieve the infrastructure in Berlin, but also significantly reduce traffic, as rbb | 24 reported. At the same time, DHL is looking for new logistics locations in the city to meet the increasing requirements, since the demand for online orders does not only last during the holidays, but has grown steadily in recent years, as well as FOCUS online
