Germany on the Olympic course: Saarbrücken decides on application for 2040!
The German Olympic Sports Association (DOSB) has taken a crucial step in the direction of application for future Olympic Games. At the general meeting on Saturday in Saarbrücken it was unanimously decided to record the so -called "Continuous Dialogue" with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). DOSB President Thomas Weikert emphasized that this was a "clear sign" for the international audience and that the decision on the final application concept should be made at the latest on December 6, 2025, such as rbb24 reported.
The next step: where and when?
The question of where Germany will apply for the 2036 or 2040 Olympics remains open. Weikert stated that four regional concepts should be further developed at the beginning of next year, whereby cities such as Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig and Munich as well as the federal states of Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia are being involved. This happens in an international context, since numerous competitors, especially from Asia, are also interested in an application, such as Sportschau reported.
During the meeting, the DOSB also called for the establishment of a Minister of State for Sports in the Federal Chancellery in order to represent the sports policy interests at the highest level. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) also spoke out for an application and emphasized the importance of such major events to position Germany in international sport. The enthusiasm for the Olympic Games remains noticeable, especially after the successful experiences of the Saarland athletes at this year's games in Paris. The DOSB is optimistic that Germany is not only in the competition for the games, but can also successfully help to present Berlin and other cities as attractive host locations.
