Title: Berlin Senate stops cycle path planning due to security concerns
In Berlin, the plans for two new cycle paths were permanently stopped due to considerable concerns regarding traffic safety. The affected routes are the Roedernallee between Nordgraben and Oranienburger Straße in Wittenau and the Blankenfeld Chaussee in Berlin-Lübars. The transport administration announced this on Monday.
At Roedernallee, a significant revision is necessary for reasons of traffic safety. Those responsible have significant concerns about truck and bus traffic as well as the traffic light circuits in this area. There are also doubts about the traffic safety and performance of road traffic in terms of the planned cycle path plans for the Blankenfeld Chaussee. In both cases, new plans are to be developed.
Some cycle path projects can be continued largely as planned. These include Hansastraße (Pankow), Grellstraße (Pankow), Köpenicker Landstraße between Baumschulenweg and Bulgarian Strasse (Treptow-Köpenick), Hermannstrasse (Neukölln) and the crossing of Hellersdorfer Straße with a connection to Ernst-Bloch-Straße (Marzahn-Hellersdorf). However, changes are also required in these cases. For example, the interaction between cycling and truck and bus traffic at Hansastraße must be taken into account more. The existing plans of the Köpenicker Landstrasse must be revised in terms of possible accident hazards and the traffic light circuit on Grellstraße should be adjusted.
Overall, due to the rapid test, new cycle paths can now be built on eleven main streets. However, this is not the end of the exams, further cycle paths should follow promptly, said traffic senator Manja Schreiner (CDU). During the exams, the traffic safety of all road users is taken into account equally. This has the highest priority in the assessment of streets.
The cycle path on Ollenhauerstrasse in Reinickendorf is to be opened promptly after it was stopped shortly before the planned opening. Already upgraded markings have been overlooked again. In order to continue to offer parking spaces along the street, car drivers can park on the right lane in the evening and at night. Transport councilor Julia Schrod-Thiel and traffic senator Manja Schreiner see a good example of factual traffic planning in Ollenhauerstrasse.
The decision on the planned conversion of the main street and Grunewaldstraße in Schöneberg should be made this week. It is checked to what extent the cycle path planning is eliminated for car traffic and car parking spaces. Critics fear that new planning could be at the expense of the square for bicycle traffic. There is also a risk that funding from the federal government will expire if the completion is significantly delayed due to the new planning.
