Cottbus in geocaching fever: 19 teams fight for the championship title!

Cottbus, Deutschland - Today, on June 13, 2025, Cottbus becomes the center for treasure hunters, because the 19th German Geocaching Championship will take place this weekend. The event is organized by the defending champions from Lusatia, who themselves are not allowed to participate. The venue is the site of the ESV Lokraw boathouse, where 19 teams from different parts of Germany compete for competition.

The teams are composed of five people and come from regions such as Berlin, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. A total of 43 teams have applied, 18 of which were able to qualify. The 19th team received a wildcard. Even non -qualified teams will be present during the event, which gives the event additional dynamics.

The competition and its elements

As part of the championship, the participants are looking for hidden containers, the so-called caches, with the help of GPS coordinates. In these caches there are logbooks in which the finders can register. In addition to the organization, Falk Pinkwart, reigning German champion, also has the task of designing a circuit with a total of eleven stations in downtown Cottbus. The teams have to solve tasks at every station that increasingly require complex puzzles and teamwork.

The tasks at the various stations are not only creative, but also require speed, orientation and logical thinking from the participants. Historically, the event has become more important since its foundation in 2003 and attracts both active participants as well as spectators and curious people. A blocking circuit of 50 kilometers around Cottbus also ensures that neutrality remains preserved

community formation and team building

The geocaching championship also pursues the goal of community formation and fun in addition to the competition. Team building elements are an essential component of such events. Geocaching promotes teamwork and communication, which makes it a popular activity in the corporate world. This form of team building includes creative tasks, competitive spirit and strategic planning, which requires the participants to be challenged on many levels.

Falk Pinkwart, who organizes the championship, plans to start again with his team in the coming year, but not to organize again in Cottbus. Meanwhile, more than 50 helpers help to look after the various stations and to ensure that the championship run smoothly.
