Parents and district unit: Security for school children in Charlottenburg

Alarm mood at the Nelson Mandela School! Parent representatives had met with those responsible for the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district to improve the security situation for the small road users. The result? A clear, courageous strategy for improving the pathway that brings spectacular changes in Pfalzburger Straße!

How did it come about? Misunderstandings and false expectations have made the prior implementation of a school road into a chaos! Despite the well-intentioned "Kiss & Go" zones on Hohenzollerndamm main road, it quickly became clear: there are not only cars here, there is a traffic drama here! Countless parking violations and heavy traffic made it almost impossible to keep these zones secure.

School roads are no longer taboo! They were identified as an effective means to drastically reduce the traffic of bringing parents near schools. A look at the figures: Before setting up the school road, traffic supervisors had around 60 vehicles between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. - with a student body of 500 and a city -wide catchment area, a low quota. After the introduction of school road, however, traffic broke in: only around 20 vehicles clogged the access to school!

And it goes on! In the coming year, the area around the Nelson Mandela School will be covered with structural measures that aim to increase security for school children immeasurably. The introduction of a one-way regulation, improved visual axes and clear, safer kiss-and-go zones will no longer be only wishful thinking. The district even checks new speed loss strategies!

The future of school road

"We are determined to do better!" District City Councilor Oliver Schruoffenger explains. School roads are important, but sometimes they fail because of reality! Traffic complications and long approaches between intersections and school buildings make new structural measures essential. In terms of security, nothing can be left to chance.

By the way: The temporary school road remains for another week, while the parent representative and district office are clear for further implementation. A decision on the continuation of the project is made this week! Children and parents can look forward to a safe school environment!

During the departure of more security - stay tuned how the situation develops. This topic affects all of us, because the safety of our children has a top priority!
