On October 1, 2024, the Aktionkreis Energie e.V. scheduled an important online event on the subject of Charkiw, which begins at 5:30 p.m. This event aims to give experts and interested parties an insight into the challenges of the reconstruction of the Ukrainian city, which was severely affected due to the current conflicts.
Charkiw is the second largest city in Ukraine and impresses with a remarkable architecture that ranges from neo -Gothic to modernist styles. Particularly noteworthy is particularly noteworthy, an architecture of national importance and a potential candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city not only has a rich historical substance, but also plays an important role as a cultural center of Ukraine.

Maren Schellenberg, the mayor of Steglitz-Zehlendorf, invited the city architect Kateryna Kubliska to this occasion. Kubliska is an expert in cultural and monument protection and will report on the essential tasks that are pending when reconstruction. It is also discussed which support can be provided by architects and planners. The event has the goal of taking into account the importance of monuments in the reconstruction.
The event offers a forum for exchange about experiences and knowledge on building damage and renovations. Many of the participants from the Energie e.V. campaign group have valuable contacts and knowledge of dealing with valuable building fabric that can be important for the reconstruction of Charkiw. It is explained what is needed and where there are potential cooperation options.

The invited guests include renowned specialists who have direct experience in the region. Matthias Wehry, President of Blue Shield, a club based in Berlin, is actively committed to protecting cultural assets to ensure their later restoration. Peter Schrage-Aden, who worked for the Senior Expert Service, has already carried out advice on energy and waste management in Ukraine. In addition, Olga Pischel, board member of the Steglitz-Zehlendorf City Partnership Association, will provide an overview of ongoing reconstruction projects and aid campaigns in Charkiw.
The event has several goals to promote the international cooperation between construction experts, to discuss the transferability of experiences in building renovation, and to develop strategies in order to take into account the protection of buildings from the effects of wars and natural disasters. Using specific examples, solutions for securing existing buildings should also be discussed in an emergency.
