BVG plans billions in investments in Berlin's local transport!
Adlershof, Berlin, Deutschland - The Berlin Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) faces a comprehensive infrastructure program that is to be realized over the next five years. BVG boss Henrik Falk announced that the federal government will support this project with almost 200 million euros. The planned measures include the construction of a new tram depot in Adlershof, three new electrobus depot in Treptow-Köpenick and Marienfelde as well as the extensive renovation of existing workshops in order to meet the needs of the latest underground generations. Falk underlined the intention to compensate for the failures of the past decade, since modernization measures necessary due to savings pressure were not implemented in the 2010s.
In detail, the new depot in Adlershof will play a key role. According to the BVG, the new construction will be the first tram depot for 40 years. It offers space for up to 60 vehicles and is intended to improve the efficiency of the workshop visits and increase the reliability of the company. The planning approval for the project has already been granted and so nothing stands in the way of construction in 2026. The depot is expected to be put into operation in 2030 and will be equipped with modern technology in order to meet the requirements of public transport. The property size of the depot area is about 50,000 square meters and is located on the former Kohlbahnhof.

sustainability and environmental friendliness
The BVG also relies on sustainability in its new projects. The environment of the new depot is designed, among other things, by photovoltaic systems, the greening of the track systems and innovative rainwater management. In addition, measures to relocate fence lizards are planned to create a replacement habitat. Falk explained that the new measures not only improve the infrastructure, but also to contribute to achieving climate goals.
In addition, it is ensured that the depot can also accommodate modern vehicles such as Flexity and Urbanliner in the future. This is an important step to modernize the BVG fleet and to improve the entire local transport offer in Berlin. Around 400 new jobs are created by the construction of the new depot.

The Senators for Economics and Transport, Franziska Giffey and Manja Schreiner, have spoken out for a close cooperation between the Senate Administrations and the BVG. Giffey emphasizes the need for a “public transport plan 2030” to increase the quality of life in the city and at the same time to achieve the climate goals. The focus is on connecting outdoor districts and new residential quarters.
