Adlershof, Deutschland - The Berlin Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) today announced the construction of a new company for trams in the Treptow-Köpenick district. This project is expected to stabilize public transport in southeastern Berlin from 2030. On the grounds of a former coal station in Adlershof, which comprises an area of around 50,000 square meters, storage, maintenance and repair capacities for up to 60 vehicles are created. The construction should help to make the regular workshop visits to the trams more efficient and thus increase the operating capacity. rbb24 reports that the execution planning for the necessary storage facilities, track and underground buildings are quickly pushed forward.
The planned construction for this important depot is planned for the coming year, and commissioning will be sought in 2030. The BVG boss Henrik Falk emphasizes that the new building is flexibly designed in order to meet future requirements in local transport. This is particularly relevant with regard to the current challenges in tram traffic, such as the temporary isolation of the Köpenick trams due to the collapsed Wuhlheide Bridge. The island company isolated was a significant logistical challenge for the BVG, as it lacked a suitable depot in the region to maintain the railways. The Tagesspiegel added that there is currently no cost framework for the project, since a tender is underway.
