Chancellor's head of the Chancellor expects a strong increase in votes for right-wing parties in EU and state elections
Wolfgang Schmidt, head of the Federal Chancellery, warned of the EXPLICA in Berlin at the WDR European Chancellor in the Re: Publica of clear votes for right-wing populist parties in the election for the EU Parliament and the three state elections this year. Schmidt predicted that the European Parliament would move further to the right and in the three countries in which they are chosen, the right -wing populist AfD is expected to achieve above -average election results.
The Federal Chancellor's Office, however, warned against seeing every election result as a test for the federal government and criticizing that the media often turn the AfD a linchpin of all debates. The AfD would have managed to overcome something that earlier right -wing extremist parties failed, namely to fragment itself.
Schmidt emphasized that the federal government was faced with many challenges at the same time. This includes, among other things, the need to be climate-neutral in 21 years, the Russian war of aggression, record inflation, loss of real wages and the care and accommodation of refugees as well as the support of Ukraine. All of this leads to a negative mood among people, who can lose weight through falling inflation and wage increases.
Schmidt also campaigned for the work of the federal government and explained that there were more friction areas in a triangle alliance than in a two-way coalition. He emphasized that the solution to problems requires discussions and arguments. As a metaphor, he used an iceberg to make it clear that the visible dispute was only the top of the government business and that the majority of the work lies below and is often overlooked.
It remains to be seen whether Wolfgang Schmidt's forecasts occur and the right -wing populist parties can actually record significant wins.
