Chancellor Scholz and US President Biden ignite security-political bomb: German upgrading towards Russia

The escalating international security situation and its effects on Germany

The international security situation has increasingly deteriorated in recent years. The latest step in this development was announced at the NATO summit in Berlin. Chancellor Olaf Scholz and US President Joe Biden announced that Germany will again station American weapons systems that can also achieve goals in Russia. This includes the Tomahawk type, air defense rockets and soon also hyperschall weapons.

Many experts see this upgrade as a clear indication of the serious threat that is based on Russia. NATO's military personnel assume that President Putin may risk a direct confrontation with the western alliance in order to intimidate the Europeans and move them to give in. As a result, NATO is preparing for possible provocations, for example in the Baltic States, to test alliance's determination.

While a Russian invasion in Germany is unlikely, the military is still concerned about the quick armament of Russia in the middle of the war. In order to be prepared for the worst case, threat scenarios are played through that include an escalation up to a nuclear war.

DAMY WITHING in Europe has worked well for many decades. However, the upgrade sends a signal of the strength to Putin and highlights the willingness to defend in Europe. At the same time, the guarantee is to be obtained that the United States is on its alliance obligations, especially before a possible change in the US government.

It is important to note that this muscle game between Germany and the USA is not without risk. For Russia, upgrade could be perceived as a threat, especially if Tomahawk marching aircraft could be equipped with nuclear warheads. The risk of a new arms in Europe is real.

It is unfortunate that this decision was made without public discussion without involving the citizens and their own coalition. This raises questions about whether Olaf Scholz is really the Peace Chancellor than whom he wanted to stage himself.

It remains to be seen how the SPD will react to this decision and whether a possible new US president reverses the upgrade decision. In these uncertain times, peace-moving Social Democrats could possibly rely on the former US President Trump as a hope.
