Brandenburg's MP: controversial dispute over diet increase!

In the Brandenburg state parliament there is currently a violent dispute over the diets of the MPs. The coalition of the SPD and BSW as well as the CDU are of the view that the automatic adjustment of the MPs should continue to be retained. However, this happens with the stipulation of introducing a lid. The defined limit for adaptation should in future be 3.5 percent, such as rbb24.

The planned draft law on amendment to the MPs' Act stipulates that the new regulations come into force from January 1, 2026. The diets are adjusted in two parts: The majority is calculated on the basis of income development for employees, while a smaller part depends on the changes in the consumer price. The membership of the MPs remain unchanged, while the reimbursement of rents for constituency offices will in future be limited to the net management rents. In addition, the highest equipment for rents is raised by 200 euros to take into account the increased rental prices.

Financial effects of the diet increase

In recent years, the diets of the 88 Brandenburg MPs have increased steadily. For example, in 2023 the MPs received an increase of more than 500 euros to around 9,800 euros per month. Over the years, since 2017, the diets have been adapted annually according to the income and consumer price development. The increase in 2021 and 2022 was exposed to the Corona crisis, but the diets were able to increase in 2023, 2024 and 2025. However, the automatic mechanism for increasing diet ran out in mid -April 2025.

The opposition, represented by the AfD, rejects the planned increase in diet and automatism in general and instead calls for a zero round. BSW parliamentary group leader Robert Crumbach describes the increase in diet as "wrong", but accepts the legal regulation. The SPD is undeterred and sees no need to suspend the diet increase, while the CDU supports the automatic regulation and asks critics to bring alternative suggestions.

criticism and concerns

The plans for diet adjustment carried out are also in public criticism. The Federation of Taxpayers describes the intended increase as non -transparent and not up to date. MPs are currently receiving 9,293.59 euros per month, and they also receive pension payments of EUR 2,184.83. The discussion about the compensation for MPs is not new and has a long history: Diets have existed in Germany since 1906, which have originally been understood as daily rates to enable people from simple circumstances to the political participation, as in wikipedia.

Today's state of MP is the result of many years of discussions. Questions and structure of the references and their relationship to the workload of the MPs are always the focus of public attention. If the new law is adopted, MPs are still directly responsible for regulating their own references, which has been possible since the 1975 Diet judgment.
