population development: Fewer and fewer people from EU countries are drawn to Berlin
An evaluation of the immigration figures shows that fewer and fewer people come to Berlin from the EU. Germany and its capital are becoming increasingly attractive for Indians.
Berlin has significantly less immigration from EU countries than five years ago. This is shown by data from the Statistics Office, which RBB | 24 evaluated. The number of immigration rose again last year compared to the Corona period, but by far it does not reach the values of previous years.
2022 The population of the capital grew by around 5,200 people from EU countries, in 2017 there were still over 15,000, and around 12,000 in 2018. Since then, the values have dropped, even before pandemic-only 4,250 people from other EU countries have come to Germany in 2019. A kind of net value is calculated, i.e. the sum from the new immovations, minus the continues of people from the respective country.
More and more people from India are coming to study and work
A striking number of new residents come from India, around 7,400 people. A clear increase that continues a trend: This group has been growing in Berlin for several years, but so far only 2,000 to 3,000. The number of immigrants from India has also increased significantly throughout Germany, compared to 2018 it has more than doubled.
Indian citizens are now the second largest group of foreign students in Germany, the employment rate among Indian immigrants is high - in Berlin it is around 76 percent. In order to attract other trained specialists to Germany, the Federal Government signed a “migration and mobility agreement” with India in December. Federal Minister of Labor Hubertus Heil (SPD) recently campaigned for young Indian skilled workers on his official trip to the G20 Minister of Ministers in India.
Many people flee from Ukraine from the war
Overall, despite the decline in immigration from EU countries, significantly more people came to Berlin last year than in previous years. This is largely due to the high numbers of refugees from Ukraine: over 43,000 people came to Berlin from there last year. Throughout Germany it was almost a million.
From Russia, also more people hiked to Berlin, almost 5,200. That is more than in the five previous years. This trend can also be observed all over Germany.
