Berlin Senate is promoting electromobility: 500,000 e-vehicles by 2030!

On June 17, 2025, the Berlin Senate met to discuss the current status of expansion of the charging infrastructure for electromobility. The meeting was led by Ute Bonde, the Senator for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment, as well as Franziska Giffey, the Senator for Economic Affairs, Energy and Companies. A central topic was the implementation of the decision of the House of Representatives of January 16, 2025.

The increase in charging points is particularly gratifying. There are currently more than 35,000 charging points, of which over 5,000 are open to the public and more than 3,200 have been installed in public space. The Senate plans to increase the expansion figures by 2030 as part of the overall strategy for charging infrastructure. Last year, 7,000 e-charging stations have already been added, with the aim of integrating around 500,000 electric vehicles in Berlin by 2030. The Welmo funding program is also expanded to support housing associations in building e-charging stations.

growing importance of electromobility

Electromobility is becoming increasingly central to the inner -city traffic of the future. Electric cars are characterized by their negative effects on the environment because they hardly cause fine dust emissions and produce little noise. The market share of electric cars in Berlin is growing steadily, both for private individuals and companies.

At the end of 2023, 69,637 electric vehicles were already approved in Berlin, including over 42,700 with a pure electric drive. In the past five years, the stock of electric vehicles has more than versatile. This also goes hand in hand with the expansion of the charging infrastructure, which has also grown by more than six times in the past five years. In 2023, over 1,200 new charging points were added, of which 2,376 were installed on public roads and squares. According to the Berlin agency for electromobility (EMO), the market share of the electric cars in Berlin should reach at least 30 % by 2030.

global trends in electromobility

The global trend towards electromobility shows an ambivalent picture. While around 2.3 million e-cars were registered in Germany at the end of 2023, growth has been stagnating since the end of the environmental bonus. At the global level, the number of e-cars amounted to almost 42 million, with over half of them being based in China. In Norway, in 2023 over 90 % of the new cars were fully electrical or plug-in hybrid.

Despite the challenges in the German market, Tesla remains the leading provider in the electromobility segment, while the Chinese manufacturer BYD is considered the largest electric car manufacturer. E-cars are considered more environmentally friendly, provided the electricity comes from renewable energies. Nevertheless, the production of electric vehicles, especially due to battery supplies, causes more greenhouse gases than conventional vehicles. Therefore, by their use, e-cars have to "drive out" the emissions created during production.

Another important point are the loading habits that differ significantly from region to region. In Europe, Germany had a favorable ratio with around 20.5 e-cars per loading point by 2023, but compared to other countries such as Bulgaria there is still potential for improvement. The number of publicly accessible charging stations is crucial for the successful establishment of electromobility.
