Berlin night sky shines: Northern lights in reddish colors!

The Polar lights illuminated over Berlin at night and ensured a fascinating play of colors in reddish and green tones. They were visible in many districts, including Pankow, Neukölln and Lichtenrade. The dramatic natural spectacle was the result of energetic sun wind particles that were thrown into space by sun eruptions and met the earth's magnetic field, as the German Weather Service (DWD) explains. The lights also beamed over Prenzlauer Berg and Wedding.

Scientists predict an increase in northern lights in the coming years, since the maximum solar activity is approaching. Experts such as Abigail Ball from the science magazine "New Scientist" have been announcing a phase of increased solar activity for months, which could last until 2024 or 2025. Current apps and websites provide information about the likelihood of seeing Northern Lights, depending on the KP index, which measures the strength of solar storms. Most recently, there were reports on geomagnetic storms of the G4 category, which increased the visibility of the Northern Lights in Germany.
