Berlin and Olympia: The great opportunity for the sports metropolis!
Berlin is preparing for the upcoming Olympic Games, which are to be geared into cooperation with four partner countries. The legendary Olympiastadion is ready for the big sporting event, which is not only a dream for the city, but also for sports enthusiasts. After the games, the Berliners should benefit from newly built and renovated sports facilities, as well as from new apartments in the Olympic village. This shows the hope that the event will bring sustainable benefits for the city.
In a survey of 3877 B.Z. readers, there were different opinions on current urban development. 42 percent of the respondents stated that they were satisfied with the work of their property management. In contrast, 35 percent are dissatisfied because they feel that a lot was promised but nothing was implemented. 24 percent had difficulty reaching their property management.
The story of the Olympic Stadium
The Olympiastadion Berlin has an eventful story. In 1916, Berlin was originally supposed to host the Summer Olympics, which did not take place due to the First World War. The new building of the stadium for the 1936 Olympic Games under Adolf Hitler was designed by architect Werner March. It became a symbol of the Nazi architecture in the city. The stadium was largely undamaged in World War II, although parts were used for other purposes.
After extensive renovations from 2000 to 2004, in which 70 percent of the historical substance was preserved, the stadium experienced a new heyday. The official reopening took place in 2004, and since then the stadium has organized numerous important international sporting events, including the 2006 World Cup final and the 2009 World Athletics Championships. The stadium capacity is 74,475 seats, and it is attracted to about 300,000 visitors every year, but also concerts and other big events.
Current events and future plans
The Olympic Stadium is not only used for sporting purposes, but also for important cultural events. For example, there were impressive celebrations between August and November 2011 that put over 100,000 visitors. These included exhibitions on the history of the 1936 Olympic Games as well as various art and theater projects.
With a possible application for the 2036 Olympic Games, the Olympic Stadium is again in focus. For the upcoming Football European Championship 2024 , the stadium will also align six games, including the final. Historically, the Olympic Stadium not only played a central role as a sports facility, but also as an important venue in Berlin.
For those interested, there are regular tours and visits to the stadium. Tickets are available in the visitor center and the journey is conveniently possible through local public transport, including via the U2 subway line and the S-Bahn lines S3 and S9.
