Berlin sets a sign: Euro 2024 fan zone saves tons of garbage and CO2 through reusable
almost 2 million dispatched one-way packaging: German environmental aid draws Berlin fan zone for environmentally friendly reusable concept for Euro 2024 from
Thanks to the innovative reusable concept for drinks and dishes on Germany's largest fan zone in Berlin, almost two million disposable cups, plates and cutlery can be saved during the euro 2024. This environmentally friendly initiative has now been recognized by the German Environmental Aid (DUH), which distinguished the Berlin Senate for the Interior and Sports as well as Kulturprojekt Berlin for its commitment to environmental protection. The Senate had determined the use of reusable packaging through a binding climate protection concept for Euro 2024. Compared to similar major events, the fan zone in Berlin reduces the waste by 15 times by using reusable dishes.
Barbara Metz, federal manager of the DUH, emphasized: “We are experiencing 100 percent in environmentally friendly reusable packaging for the first time in Germany, as with a fan mile. The climate, but also contributes to a clean city. Sustainability concept for stadiums prescribe the use of reusable dishes. ”
Michael Jopp, Head of Sustainability Management of the Project Group UEFA Euro 2024 for the Berlin Senate Department for the Interior and Sport, explained: "We want to celebrate football together, but not at the expense of the environment. For this reason, in cooperation with an expert body, we have developed a climate protection and adaptation concept for the euro in Berlin, from which the reusable concept for the fan zone was also clear: Half things!
In order to optimally implement reusable concepts, organizers should rely on a uniform reusable system without branding. In this way, visitors can return the dishes at all catering stands alike, and the dishes can be reused for many other events. There are 60 different catering stands on the Berlin fan zone, where reusable cups, bowls and forks can be returned. A clever solution was found for the reusable tableware used: With cargo bikes and electronic lifting waves, the dirty dishes are transported on the site and brought from there to the cute road near Berlin.
"In addition to logistics, communication around the use of reusable is crucial for a smooth process. Especially with an international audience as with this euro, it is important to make the pledge system understandable. Our 'Waste Heros' stood by the visitors during the event and informed them about the reusable system and the waste separation. In particular, we have deliberately completely dispensed with on the fan zone. Give-Away was a success, ”explains Paulina Hübner, sustainability officer at Kulturprojekt Berlin, which was commissioned by the Berlin Senate with the conception, organization and implementation of the fan zone.
