Berlin is planning new offensive against organized crime and integrates districts
Berlin wants to take a harder against organized crime, especially against criminal clans. The Justice Senator Felor Badenberg plans an offensive and is planning a closer cooperation between the districts. A model project was agreed with six district offices: Pankow, Reinickendorf, Treptow-Köpenick, Tempelhof-Schöneberg, Lichtenberg and Spandau. The goal is that the regulatory offices will be able to collect income from illegal business in the future instead of only imposing fines. Specifically, it is about income from non -approved slot machines or car rental companies operated by clans.
The judiciary emphasizes that people can only really meet people from organized crime and the clans if they are removed from them. Therefore, the judicial department wants to support the districts to also initiate judicial proceedings against the criminals. This is intended to generate additional income for the state of Berlin. A guide to this is being developed and the project should start after the summer, starting with the slot machines.
The black-red Senate also plans to create significantly more positions at the Berlin judiciary in order to be able to act more effectively against clank rimity. In the 2024/2025 double budget, funds for up to 20 additional prosecutors are intended for the area of organized crime.
Last year Berlin could have taken 91 million euros from organized crime, but in fact only 6.5 million euros were accepted. The judiciary attributes this to the lack of staff. There are good approaches in Berlin, but there is still a need for action to make the capital unattractive for organized crime. Better cooperation between the actors and clear rules as well as a comprehensive concept is required. The measures at all levels have to interlock to effectively act against crime.
