Berlin is investing millions in organization of the European Football Championship: An overview of the costs and expectations
Berlin is investing 61 million euros in the issue of the European Football European Championship next year. The costs for the state of Berlin are spread over different areas. The Senate Department for Interior and Sport broke down detailed costs on request. A total of 36.2 million euros are estimated for the release outside the stadium. This includes the security costs of 7.12 million euros and the organization of the "Host City Events", such as the fan mile at the Brandenburg Gate, in the amount of 16.68 million euros. In addition, there are costs of 24.9 million euros for sports facilities -related measures at the Olympic Stadium and the Olympic Park. The stadium is to be barrier -free and the digital infrastructure is to be improved.
The economic professor Wolfgang Maennig doubts the economic benefit for the city of Berlin. He argues that there is no example in which a region or city benefited economically from a major event. In the 2006 World Cup, the number of overnight stays in Berlin even dropped by ten percent. There are individuals who benefit from the event, such as sausage sellers near the stadium, but other industries would even lose. Maennig refers to a "repression effect" for large sporting events.
The Hotel and Gastronomieverband Berlin, on the other hand, believes that the European Championship is a large, free advertising worldwide for the city. The exact increase in income still had to be waited for, but the decline in booking figures in hotels could be avoided. Due to the digital booking, it is easier to find free rooms on a high -frequency weekend.
In the long term, Berlin benefits infrastructure from the European Championship, especially through investments in and around the Olympic Stadium. The construction work would probably not have been realized to this extent without the European Championship. The sustainability program is also intended to ensure that the Berlin sports landscape benefits from the European Championship. Sports clubs and other non -profit organizers can apply with projects that contribute to the implementation of the Berlin mission statement.
The fan mile will be located between the Brandenburg Gate and the Great Star on the Street of June 17th. A huge football goal will be created in front of the Brandenburg Gate and the street of June 17th and the square of March 18 should be greened.
