Berlin invests billions: secure the future for primary school children!

On December 3, 2024, the Senate of Berlin made important decisions to improve educational and care offers for primary school children. At the initiative of educational senator Katharina Günther-Lüsch, the Berlin state program for the implementation of the Federal Law on Financial Aid for the expansion of all-day offers was presented. The Berlin initiative is part of a comprehensive investment program that will be around 219.6 million euros by 2027, of which 153.7 million euros from the federal government and 65.9 million euros from the state of Berlin. These funds should be used, among other things, to optimize the spatial conditions of the all-day schools and to create a more effective learning and living environment, such as bundes- Government.de . The federal government and the federal states each provide one billion euros annually to support schools in coping with pupils who are severely affected by social origin.

Overall, the program aims to improve the educational success of children and adolescents and to strengthen the infrastructure of schools. With a clear focus on primary schools, 60 percent of the funds should flow into this area in order to promote basic skills such as reading, writing and arithmetic and thus counteract the declining development of competence, as Federal Minister of Education Bettina Stark-Watzinger emphasizes. This is seen as an important testimony to educational success and is intended to help to overcome the gap between social origin and educational result.
