Berlin commemorates the victims of the wall: memorial events and wreath residents on the 62nd anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall
Berlin intended on Sunday one of the darkest days in its story. Exactly 62 years earlier, on August 13, 1961, the Berlin Wall was built by the GDR regime and cut the city for 28 years. A total of at least 140 people lost their lives, including 18-year-old Peter Fechter. Fencer was a construction worker and was shot when trying to escape and bled in the death strip.
to remind of his tragic fate, a memorial column was built on Zimmerstrasse in 1999. On Sunday, representatives of the state government, the parties, sacrificial associations and peace Springer laid down a wreath on the pillar and thought in a minute of commemoration.
The central memorial event took place at the memorial on Bernauer Strasse. Senator for Economic Affairs Franziska Giffey (SPD) also laid down a wreath on behalf of the Senate.
The memory of the Berlin Wall and their victims remains alive even after 31 years of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The memorials and events serve to keep history awake and not to let the horrors of this time be forgotten.
