Construction industry continues to record declining orders and sales declines in Rhineland-Palatinate
housing construction in May continued in the order minus
Housing construction showed no positive development in May. On the contrary, the Situation continues to deteriorate. The real order intake was 3.8 percent below the previous year and in the first five months a minus of 4.0 percent was recorded. This leads to a real drop in sales of 15.0 and 12.0 percent for construction companies. Tim-Oliver Müller, managing director of the main association of the German construction industry, comments on these economic figures. The situation is alarming and already has an impact on the housing market, which is already tense.
The statistics of the Federal Statistical Office also show a decline in employees of 4.6 percent in the area of the construction industry for the period from January to April. As a result, fewer workers are available for housing. This further deteriorates the situation on the housing market.
In May,In May, however, the entire construction industry was stagnated by the real order incoming compared to the previous month and a slight increase (+ 1.1 percent) compared to the previous year. This is mainly due to basic effects, since the positive change rates are based on negative results in the previous year. In contrast, there was a decline in business creation because the results in May of the previous year were significantly higher. Overall, a decline will be shown for civil engineering in May 2024. It is important to mention that these numbers reflect the overall German average and the construction -economic development in the individual regions is very different.
The nominal change rates range from a minus of 32.6 percent in Rhineland-Palatinate to an increase of 48.0 percent in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Even over five months, the range ranges from a minus of 42.3 percent in Bremen to an increase of 18.6 percent in Saarland. A real plus of 1.6 percent is shown in the all -German average.
The real plus is not enough to positively influence the real sales in the main building industry. A minus of 4.5 percent was recorded in May and a minus of 1.3 percent for the period from January to May. The decline could have been even higher, but this was prevented due to the decline in the construction price increase. The double -digit or high single -digit growth rates belong to the past and hopefully will show no significant increase in the future.
The data of the Federal Statistical Office and the IFO Institute clearly show the tense situation in housing and in the construction industry as a whole. It is important that measures are taken to relieve the housing market and support future growth. This is the only way to achieve a positive development.
