Expansion of the therapy studies for long covid diseases - free voters demand more research
to tomorrow's “International Long Covid Awareness Day”, the free voters are calling for an expansion of the therapy studies in the Post/Long Covid diseases area. According to the population studies from Great Britain and Canada, at least 3 percent of the Long Covid population are affected. Since there are more than 200 different symptoms, the diagnosis is still difficult. The free voters therefore support an expansion of research funding, especially in the area of biomedical and clinical research. In addition, the clinical pictures should be integrated more into medical and nursing education and training.
The people affected before pandemic in Germany suffered from long-term diseases such as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and the chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), which almost followed almost every second post-covid disease. According to estimates, 4 million Post-Covid patients in Germany are currently affected, of which almost 1 million of them are unable to work due to Long Covid. The economic damage is estimated at over 40 billion euros per year.
So far, only 31 million euros have been provided for therapy studies by the Ministry of Research and Health, while over 2 billion euros were spent on researching Covid itself. This leads to an urgent need for rethinking in the affected ministries, given the high level of suffering of those affected and the massive economic costs. So far there has been no approved curative treatment or healing for Long Covid.In order to sensitize all actors in the healthcare system for the concerns of Post/Long Covid diseases, the free voters use the International Long Covid Awareness Day as an action day.
