Number of pharmacies and their supply capacity by state: An analysis of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis)

A pharmacy in Germany provides an average of 4,819 people

Health care in Germany is of great importance and pharmacies play an important role. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), a pharmacy provided an average of 4,819 people at the end of 2023. In comparison, an average of 3 909 residents came to a pharmacy ten years ago. This shows that the number of pharmacies per inhabitant has increased over time.

The number of people who need to be cared for by a pharmacy varies depending on the federal state. Especially in the city -states of Bremen, Berlin and Hamburg, there were an above -average number of people who claim a pharmacy at the end of 2023. In Saarland, on the other hand, fewer residents came to a pharmacy on average. The situation was similar in Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.

In order to ensure the extensive supply of pharmacies in the long term, the presence of pharmacists is also discussed. In 2023, around 214,000 people worked in German pharmacies, most of whom were women. Pharmacists made a share of 27.9 % of workers in pharmacies. Pharmaceutical-technical assistants worked under the supervision of pharmacists and represented a share of 31.5 %. Sales and drivers assumed 23.2 % of the workers in pharmacies.

The sales of pharmacies have increased by more than a third in the past ten years, while sales in inpatient retail have increased less. Despite the challenges of corona pandemic, pharmacies recorded high sales in 2020 and 2021. This is due to the fact that pharmacies were never affected during the pandemic of closings. However, the sales of pharmacies decreased in 2023 compared to the previous year.

The data on the number of residents per pharmacy are based on the results of the 2011 census and the Federal Association of German Pharmacy Associations. The information on the employed in pharmacies comes from the first results of the microcensus 2023. This data is obtained by a sample survey and compensated for the total population.

The supply of healthcare services, in particular by pharmacies, is of great importance for the population in Germany. Adequate and accessible care should continue to be guaranteed to support the health and well -being of people.
