Old mines endanger Bernau: Evacuation and explosions in June!

The city of Bernau in the Barnim district faces a challenging situation. During construction work on the Schwanebecker Chaussee, over 200 tank defense mines from Soviet production were discovered. The mayor André Stahl informed about this at a city council last Thursday. The site is located on the site of the former army clothing office, where a new residential area with up to 2000 apartments, a school and two daycare centers is planned. Despite the discovery, however, there is no acute danger to the residents, since most mines are transportable and can be removed.

of the 211 mines found 14, however, must be blown up on site. The plans for the explosion are still at the beginning. The blast date is expected to take place at the end of June. The exact determination of the blocking circles and their size is currently still in coordination, but it is already expected that parts of the district of Lindow have to be cleared. This affects a few dozen buildings and could lead to evacuations. In addition, the A11 motorway is expected to be closed during the explosive measures, which can lead to restrictions on traffic.

evacuation and blocking measures

The city has already taken measures to offer the affected residents alternative accommodations. Experts of the ordnance clearing service are involved in the preparations in order to safely carry out the explosions and to minimize the risk of danger for the population. Information on evacuation is distributed via social media, radio and the Nina Warn app. The residents should be prepared to leave their apartments during the explosive measures.

The phenomenon of the find of explosive fighting is not new in Germany. Old ammunition, grenades or bombs are regularly discovered on construction sites or former military exercises. In 2024, for example, around 61 tons of such objects were found in Thuringia. Before carrying out construction projects, a careful analysis of historical data is therefore necessary to make out potential danger spots, as describes the ADAC website. If ammunition residues are suspected, construction companies are obliged to inform the relevant authorities in order to avoid security risks.

The citizens of Bernau are asked to remain calm and to follow the instructions of the city administration and the ordnance clearing service. During the explosions, the restrictions are expected to be shorter than with similar missions in other cities, such as in Oranienburg. Nevertheless, the company can be temporarily stopped at local train stations and other traffic points. In order to counteract these incidents, the ordnance clearing service relies on technical progress such as floor scanners and drones to facilitate the salvage.

The city of Bernau is systematically working on clarifying the security situation and informing the residents about the upcoming measures. Cooperation with the responsible authorities and experts is a top priority to ensure a safe environment for the population.
