Berlin's social senator Cansel Kiziltepe, member of the SPD, called for the homeless people in the city to provide more attention and support. She emphasized that all Berliners had social responsibility for the people in the city.

Not only in winter, but also in summer extreme heat and cool nights represent an increasingly acute threat to street dwellers. In contrast to most people, homeless people do not have the opportunity to refresh themselves with a bottle of water or an ice cream, go to the outdoor pool or take a shower.

For this reason, it is all the more important that everyone in Berlin is aware and appeals to homeless if they could be in need. Kiziltepe emphasized this during a tour of Alexanderplatz, where she found out about the road social work at Juri Schaffranek from the Gangway organization

In the event that someone is in an acute emergency situation, Kiziltepe recommended that you choose the emergency call. In addition, various carriers of street social work offer advice and concrete help via the uniform hotline 0157-805 978 70.

The number of homeless people in Berlin is alarming. A count at the beginning of 2020 resulted in around 2,000 homeless people, but this number of experts is considered to be less resilient. It is assumed that the actual number is significantly higher. Juri Schaffranek described the problem as increasingly in Berlin.

The increase in the homeless young people in the city is particularly worrying. Focal points include the areas around Alexanderplatz, Zoo station, the main train station, the Ostbahnhof, the Görlitzer Park and the Wrangelkiez.

In order to improve the situation, the Senate plans to increase funding in the coming year from currently one million euros to three million euros. The social workers actively look for homeless people and offer them food, refreshments, hygiene articles and sunscreen.

So it is important to be attentive and to promote solidarity together to help the homeless person in Berlin. This is the only way to solve the problem in the long term.
