The dangers for older drivers

The tragic accidents once again put a light on the risks that older road users are exposed to in today's society. With increasing age, responsiveness and eyesight can decrease, which can affect driving safety. According to adac , senior citizens are more at risk in road traffic. In 2023, people aged 65 and over caused only 18.5 % of accidents with personal injury, although they make up about 22 % of the population.

The fact that over 50 % of the fatally crashed pedestrians and cyclists can be found in this age group is particularly worrying. The ADAC expert Ulrich Chiellino emphasizes that older people are often more susceptible to injuries and must therefore be particularly protected.

The organization recommends regular medical examinations, especially for vision, in order to critically review your own driving ability. In addition, drivers should talk to their doctor about health changes in order to identify potential risks and, if necessary, consider alternative means of transport.

Alternatives to driving as well as programs such as the "Fahr-Fitness-Check" and driving safety training of the ADAC help older road users to improve their driving skills and to stay more securely in road traffic.
