Quality instead of waste: Innovative initiative for sustainable food storage in Halle
Halle (Saale) becomes the setting of a pioneering campaign: The XXL refrigerator of the initiative "Too good for the bin!" In Germany, around 11 million tons of food waste are produced annually, including 6.5 million tons in private households. "Too good for the bin!" Since 2012, it has been committed to drawing consumers: to draw attention to the problem inside and to give them practical tips on how to reduce food waste. With the XXL refrigerator you can now bring your message directly to the consumers: on the inside.
The impressive refrigerator that visits a total of ten cities in Germany, inspires visually designed scenes and exciting stories about the correct storage of food. But not only that: he also presents innovative solutions that raise awareness of sustainable action. From self-packaging bread to cheese that keeps your own compartment clean, the XXL fridge provides AHA experiences and stimulates thinking about dealing with food.
The focus of the campaign is to reduce food waste along the entire food supply chain. In addition to private households, the BMEL also focuses on sectors primary production, processing, wholesale and retail and outdoor catering. Together with the business participants, the BMEL plans to halve the food waste in Germany by 2030 and reduce food losses.
The commitment to waste of food is an important contribution to the Federal Government's nutritional strategy. In addition to measures such as a pact against a waste of food with trade and a target agreement for out-of-home catering, the BMEL also examines legal steps to facilitate food donations.
