Housing construction as the key to Northvolt project: Associations are demanding support from the government and the EU

housing industry: the federal and state governments have to support the Dithmarschen region

The planned battery factory of the Swedish company Northvolt in the Dithmarschen region will have a significant impact on the housing market. The housing management associations GDW and VNW have asked the state and federal government to support the region in the creation of affordable apartments and to campaign for the Northvolt project in Brussels.

The settlement of Northvolt is considered the largest industrial settlement in northern Germany in northern Germany. The investment volume amounts to around 4.5 billion euros and 3,000 jobs are to be created. However, the housing management associations fear that political managers do not fully recognize the importance of the associated housing market challenges.

GDW President Axel Gedaschko and VNW director Andreas Breitner expressed their concerns when visiting the Northvolt construction site in Heide. They asked the federal government not only to support the local municipalities in creating living space, but also to provide money. The associations indicate that the construction of apartments requires more time and advance than the establishment of the factory itself.

According to experts, the settlement of Northvolt needs up to 1,500 new apartments. There are currently around 70,000 apartments in the Dithmarschen district. The concern is that people who have less income will have problems finding affordable living space because well-paid Northvolt employees compete on the housing market.

To support the project, the associations suggest that Northvolt include in a network of national partners. They also want to promote the project in Berlin, Hamburg and Brussels. The GDW plans to draw the EU in Brussels aware of the challenges of the settlement and to ask for more support for the infrastructure.

The associations demand a master plan from the Kiel state government that includes living in the Dithmarschen region. In order to create enough living space, a task force for the state development in Heide should be set up. The landlords are also asked to get involved in the region and to stay there in the long term.

The planned battery factory from Northvolt in Dithmarschen is an important project for the economic development of the region. It is crucial that the governments at the federal and state levels recognize the challenges of the housing market and take the necessary measures in order to create a sufficient number of affordable apartments. This is the only way to ensure that all sections of the population can benefit from this large industrial resettlement.
