Home ownership remains a popular saving motif: Results of the summer survey 2024 of the private building societies

The saving motif "residential property" has again made it to the top 3 of the savings motif, according to the current summer survey 2024 on the savings behavior of Germans. The cantar's opinion research institute interviewed over 2,000 people aged 14 and over on behalf of the association of private building societies. The distance to fourth place has increased because the “capital investment” savings has decreased significantly.

The survey shows that the “old -age provision” saving motif is still in 1st place. 58 percent of those surveyed called this saving motif. The “consumption” saving motif is 45 percent in second place. The “home ownership” savings motive recorded an increase of one percentage point and is now taking third place with 43 percent.

"People are not ready to give up their dream of their own four walls," explains Christian König, managing director of the association of private building societies. "Sparing is indispensable. You do that too and strain for it."

When considering the savings motifs, it is striking that the “capital investment” saving motif records a significant decline. The number of those called this saving motif has dropped from 40 percent to 32 percent. Nevertheless, this value is still slightly above the values ​​of previous years.

Another change can also be seen in the “emergency huddoos” saving motif and in the “training of the children”. Both savings have recorded an increase and now come to 6 percent or 4 percent.

The survey results show that more and more people in Germany are paying attention to saving money for their dream of home. The “home ownership” saving motif has once again placed in the top 3 of the savings motif, while the saving motif "investment" has lost importance. This reflects the desire of people to be financially secure and to realize their dream of their own four walls.
