Re -election Ursula von der Leyens: political center stronger than ever
"Nd.Dentag": A new look at Ursula von der Leyen's re-election as EU Commission President
The re-election of Ursula von der Leyen to the EU Commission President in 2019 almost felt like a déjà-vu: the same relieved, radiant face. But this time it was different. This time the question was whether the unusual alliance between conservative, (economic) liberals, social democrats and some Greens would have. And it existed - the success of the right -wing extremists did not prevent them from standing together and defending what is considered a political center. Perhaps the announcement that the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has partially contributed to this.
It remains to be seen whether this election alliance will influence politics permanently. In her speech, all factions offered something from the Leyen, but in political everyday life the differences will quickly be noticeable. Will your already promised climate -friendly social policy take shape or will the industrial -friendly course be reinforced? And will she as a CDU politician keep looking on the right edge for support? The further expansion of Frontex and the expansion of the deportation regime indicate this.
Ultimately, the Leyen primarily wants to implement their conservative program in small steps. The time of the great announcements and self -staging is over. Instead, we will experience a continuation of the status quo and a restriction of too strict requirements, such as a ban on combustion engines.
The Commission President goes strengthened to her second term. A progressive, socio-ecological policy change is therefore unlikely. The old Leyen-Leier will continue for the time being.
This article is based on a comment from "Nd.Dentag" and has the goal of viewing and analyzing the re -election of Ursula von der Leyen from a different perspective.
difficult words:
- The ad hoc alliance: a short -term alliance
- close the rows: hold together
- The right edge: right -wing extremist parties
- to boot the Hungarian Council President: Partly excluding decisions
- climate social policy: environmental and socially friendly politics
- The industrial -friendly course: politics that meets the interests of industry
- The right edge: right -wing extremist parties
- Frontex: European border and coast guard
- The deportation regime: The regulations and measures to deport people
- more of the same: similar politics as before
- The old Leyen-Leier: Continuous political rhetoric and agenda by Ursula von der Leyen
