Resistance to Fu Berlin: Kiez resisting container village
The property on Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem, which is currently still being used as a parking space, is the focus of controversy. The Senate plans to build a container village for 260 refugees on this area, which leads to resentment in the neighborhood, especially at the Free University (FU). The university actually plans to build a building for teaching and research on the site and feels over the sore plans. President Günter Ziegler complained that he had only learned from the project from the newspaper and emphasized that the university management had not approved this measure.
FU Berlin is generally ready to support refugee people, but cannot offer alternative areas due to their high need for renovation and extensive construction planning. She points out that buildings of the Federal Real Estate Agency are empty nearby and could represent a potential option for refugee accommodation. In the meantime, the special representative of the Senate for Refugee Questions, Albrecht Broemme, urban open spaces to find solutions for the accommodation of refugees.
At the end of March of this year, the Senate decided to build 16 other container villages in order to counter the acute lack of living space for refugees. The locations of the new container villages focus mainly in the eastern part of the city, which can lead to tensions and imbalances in refugee accommodation. The university and its resistance to the planned container village have led to heated discussions on social media, with some users criticizing the lack of support from the University of Refugees and questioning the "Woke" facade of the institution.
