World Health Organization warns of MPOX spread: lack of money at risk of combating the disease
Comment from "Nd.Dentag" on the MPOX cases in Africa
After the spread of the MPOX virus in Africa, the World Health Organization (WHO) has proclaimed a “health emergency position of international reach”. However, this decision has no immediate consequences such as during the Sars-COV-2 pandemic. The MPOX virus is less transferable and can be more easily contaminated through timely detection. Theoretically, at least, because in poor countries the required requirements are missing.
The proclamation of the health emergency from the WHO is a desperate wake -up call. In the past few months, the UN organization has repeatedly pointed out the rising MPOX cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries, but the reactions have failed to materialize. Reliable data and diagnostic capacities are urgently needed on site. In addition, a quick delivery of available vaccines and ordering further doses is required. But there is simply a lack of financial resources. Therefore, this warning should finally bring movement into the matter and make it clear that the problem can also affect other continents if the spread is uncontrolled.
However,it is more than just a failure in terms of MPOX. The world has still not teached from dealing with Corona in relation to pandemic prevention. Foreign policy tensions and the spread of right -wing extremist disinformation prevent the conclusion of a globally valid pandemic agreement. It is also worrying that wealthy states are not interested in solving structural problems in the public healthcare system of poor countries. As a result, the great infectious diseases, including the more dangerous than MPOX, will not be possible.
It is therefore time to learn from past mistakes and to invest in sustainable prevention of pandemics. The MPOX virus is just another example of how lack of preparation and financial support can lead to serious global health crises. The international community must work together to strengthen the health systems of disadvantaged countries and to contain the spread of infectious diseases. This is the only way we can effectively combat future epidemics and pandemics and protect the health of all people.
