Water tourism in Brandenburg: growth opportunities despite obstacles!

Water tourism in Berlin and Brandenburg, despite its considerable growth, has remained with serious challenges in recent years. According to a current study by the Brandenburg and Berlin Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK), the industry suffer from an acute shortage of labor, a lack of berths for boats and excessive bureaucratic effort. The study based on surveys by around 800 companies proves that annual gross turnover in water tourism has risen from 200 million euros to 300 million euros and that around 6,100 people in the region are busy, but there is an urgent need for action to secure further growth, such as Rbb24 reports.

The IHK calls for increased investments in the infrastructure to meet the demand for safe and well -developed berths for boats. Christian Herzog, General Manager of IHK Potsdam, emphasizes that a significant increase in demand can be observed, especially in touristy -frequented areas. In addition to the needs situation, it was found that the industry is increasingly focusing on sustainable growth, including the willingness to e-mobility. In order to promote water tourism sustainably, an update of the economic effects that the industry creates was urgently needed, which the IHK successfully implemented with the new study “Economic Effects in Water Tourism in Berlin and Brandenburg”, such as IHK Ostbrandenburg makes it clear.

In addition, water tourism offers significant economic potential that not only strengthen the region, but also contribute to improving the leisure value. Each charter boat vacationer spends an average of 24 euros a day, which has a significant impact on local shops. At the same time, almost 60 percent of the providers expect increasing demand for boat trips, while the industry sees further growth opportunities through daring innovations and higher investments. However, in order to fully exploit this potential, it is essential to optimize the political framework (e.g. the simplification of approval procedures) and to invest in the necessary infrastructure.
