Water tourism in Berlin and Brandenburg: opportunities and challenges!
Water tourism in Berlin and Brandenburg has developed into an important industry in recent years, but is currently confronted with serious challenges. A comprehensive study by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) Brandenburg and Berlin, presented on Thursday, shows that an acute shortage of workers, insufficient berths for boats and excessive bureaucratic hurdles burden the industry. Despite an increase in the annual gross turnover from 200 million euros to EUR 300 million in the past decade, the prospects of these structural problems are affected. According to the investigation, which around 800 companies surveyed, the industry expects increased demand for secure berths, especially in popular tourism regions, as managing director Christian Herzog reports. The IHK therefore calls for targeted political measures for investments in the infrastructure of the region to increase the tourist attraction of the region, according to RBB24 reported.
growth opportunities and challenges
water tourism is not only considered a backbone of regional development, but was also recognized as a driving force for new economic impulses. The new edition of the study “Economic Effects in Water Tourism in Berlin and Brandenburg” illustrates that the industry needed updating through the Covid 19 pandemic and previous developments. The last examination is now ten years old. The current results are intended to help demonstrate the economic relevance of the sector and will be presented in the IHK Berlin on February 13, 2025. The IHK commissioned the Konsortium Project M GmbH and Tourismkontor to carry out this analysis, which not only illuminates the profitability of the existing companies, but also outlines future investment needs. The study covers numerous aspects, including the number of people in the relevant companies and their economic key figures, such as IHK Ostbrandenburg.
Nevertheless, growth is endangered by an inadequate number of berths for boats, a highly competitive job market and lengthy approval procedures. The IHK points out that every third provider is dissatisfied with the bureaucratic effort, which significantly increases operating costs. In addition, the industry is under pressure to find suitable specialists, which is an additional challenge in view of the seasonal nature of many offers.
